How active play can encourage imaginative play

/ / Uncategorized

Active play offers numerous benefits to children in terms of their happiness, health and development, but one area it really helps is improving their ability to engage in imaginative play. In itself, imaginative play has a wealth of benefits for children and the active play environment is the perfect place to really get the imagination going.

The benefits of imaginative play

The benefits of imaginative play for developing children are vast. This type of play encourages them to use their own minds rather than play that has been laid out or set up for them to be done in a certain way. Children who are encouraged to use their imaginations are more likely to grow up as free thinkers who are able to solve problems better, fit into groups better, entertain themselves and to make better sense of the world around them.

Imaginative play in an active, soft play environment

The larger play equipment we have at Little Giggles is perfect for imaginative play. This is because the equipment is not deterministic, which means there is no ‘set’ use for it. What children can do on a certain bit of equipment is open to their imagination and it may be incorporated into a role play game, or can be used to set challenges for themselves or to pretend it’s something else, like a boat, car or spaceship.

One of the great things about bringing your children to a large indoor play area like Little Giggles is that it opens them up to playing with children they’ve never met. For most children, their circle of friends to play with will include siblings and the children at school, preschool or clubs. At a public play centre, however, they will encounter new people and imaginative play is a great way to build social bonds and give children an opportunity to try out new ways of playing.
Engaging in creative role play is a key part of a child’s development and our indoor play areas can help enable this sort of play thanks to the versatility of the equipment and the opportunity to make new bonds.
